2018 Home Decor Trends

January 27, 2018

Pantone has identified, “Ultra Violet” – a rich purple tone – as its color of the year for 2018. Incorporating bold colors throughout the home is just one design trend we see as a major force for the year. While some design trends are timeless, sometimes it’s refreshing to through something a little trendier or daring into your home. We scoured the predictions for 2018 and compiled the following list of trends that will be hot, hot, hot for the next twelve months!

Typography

If you look forward to morning coffee in your favorite mug with typewriter initial mug, get ready to introduce more typography throughout your home. From calligraphic quotes on pillows to handwritten prints and patterns on wall art (or wallpaper!) typography will play a big role in home design in 2018. Glasses and china will also be common items to embrace the typography trend. Consider incorporating smaller items into a room to participate in this trend without it overwhelming your existing style. Actual books and paper products are also making a comeback in 2018. Whether it’s framing a 1960s ad for bubble bath for the guest bathroom or stacking meaningful tomes on your mantel, consider the written word as an accent for any room.

Metallic and Iridescent Textures

From wallpaper to fixtures and throw pillows to rugs, metallic and iridescent textures are having a serious moment in home décor. Copper, in particular, has been leading the metallic pack in recent years, but brass will be the metallic of the moment in 2018. Though some choose to fully embrace this trend with items like brass coffee tables, consider a smaller investment, like throw pillows will gold threads or pearlescent lamps. Iridescent textures are just starting to break into designs, from side tables to bathroom backsplashes. This is the newest of the texture trends, however, so give it some time to develop – and more affordable pieces to make it to market.

Natural or Rustic Elements

Bringing the outside in will also play a major role in design trends for 2018. Exposed brick or millwork, natural woods, limestone and cement textures are all cropping up in unexpected place. Accent walls of exposed brick in the home are turning up more and more, as are wood ceilings. Cement will, surprisingly, be a major trend in sinks. Some see this trend as a response to the increasingly large role of technology in the home. Whatever the driving factor, there are many was to bring this trend into your own home. Start small with items like wooden bowls or other accent pieces and work your way up to full-blown exposed brick walls.

International Influences

Wicker and rattan are also weaving their way into modern designs. Baskets, hammocks, lacey daybeds and Moroccan lanterns have all appeared in recent, trendsetting designs. These elements deliver an international and artisan flavor that helps your home break the cookie cutter mold. Bring a little culture into guest rooms, living rooms and other public spaces. The kitchen is also a great place to start small.

Under the Sea Designs

Imaginative and playful elements have come into popularity in recent years, but ocean-inspired designs will also lead for 2018. Fish scale tiles as flooring or backsplashes in the bathroom are a logical introduction. Glass bubbles, featured prominently in light fixtures, are also coming into vogue. On a smaller scale, expect to see sea life scattered throughout your décor: octopi, starfish, lobsters and coral will be everywhere. From patterns on china to fanciful octopus bowl stands, the ocean is going to be all the wave. (Sorry, we had to.)
