2025 Sundance Film Festival: Your Big Questions Answered
January 13, 2025
When people think of Park City, they don’t just imagine skiing — they also think of the Sundance Film Festival. Having Park City as its home base since 1981, the legendary festival brings droves of locals and out-of-towners to the gorgeous mountain town every year. However, the festival may be moving out of Utah in the coming years. Here’s what you need to know about that potential move, and what to expect from the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
Is Sundance Film Festival Moving?
In a word: maybe. The Sundance Institute recently announced that three U.S. cities will be in consideration to host the festival beginning in 2027: Boulder, Colorado; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Park City/Salt Lake City, Utah. The winner is currently scheduled to be announced in late winter or early spring 2025. So for now, the festival remains one of Utah’s can’t-miss winter activities.
When Is the 2025 Festival?
The 2025 Sundance Film Festival runs Jan. 23 – Feb. 2 in Park City, Salt Lake City, and the Sundance Mountain Resort (near Provo). These three spots host film screenings each day from morning through night. Park City also hosts numerous festival events like panel discussions, concerts, and parties, among many others.
How Do I See the Films?
Ticket package sales ended Jan. 10, but single film ticket sales start on Jan. 16. Visit the festival’s ticketing site to purchase tickets. If you want to see the films and events but can’t attend in person, the festival has made many of its these films and events available to view online. Online viewers are encouraged to follow certain requirements, which the Sundance Institute outlines here.
Which Films Should I See?
With more than 90 feature films and 50 short films on the slate this year, you have a lot to choose to from. And who knows, you may even catch the next big Oscar winner or box office titan. It wouldn’t be out of the ordinary: Sundance has premiered numerous Oscar winners like “Moonstruck, “Whiplash,” and “CODA,” along with pop culture touchstones like “Napoleon Dynamite” and “The Blair Witch Project.”
Can I Still Ski During the Festival?
Absolutely! Park City’s main ski resorts — Deer Valley, Park City Mountain, and Woodward Park City — keep their slopes open during the festival. So bring your skis and snowboards, because the slopes welcome you!
