Focus on Your Sleep

Sleep is important for your mental and physical health, and not getting enough of it can lead to loss of productivity and mood swings! Our first three healthy habits to try in 2021 all revolve around getting your Zzz’s. Healthy Habit #1: No screens one hour before bed. The light from your phone, laptop, and TV can trick your brain into staying awake for longer than you mean to, bringing us to our second habit to try out. Healthy Habit #2: Stick to a sleep schedule! While it can be tempting to stay up late a few nights and sleep in longer some mornings, sticking to a sleep schedule can train your brain to stay asleep and give your body the rest it needs. Healthy Habit #3: Create a restful environment. Whether that means investing in blackout curtains or grabbing a few extra blankets and pillows, by creating a special environment only meant for sleep, your body will know exactly when it’s time to rest and when it’s time to work.

Take the Time for Self-Care

After testing out the first three healthy habits, consider trying out the next three all revolving around self-care. Healthy Habit #4: Set tangible monthly goals instead of ominous yearly resolutions. These goals should be realistic and easy to incorporate into your daily life. By setting smaller goals instead of giant resolutions, you’ll feel more motivated to incorporate the change into your life and complete the goal. Healthy Habit #5: Take 15 minutes every day to journal. Whether it’s in the morning, at your lunch hour, or even before bed, journaling is a healthy way to “get everything out” of your brain and make your feelings concrete. Journaling can even help you decrease your anxiety and increase your emotional well-being. Finally, Healthy Habit #6: Practice mindfulness. While easier said than done, trying to live in the moment can help you focus your attention while observing thoughts and feelings you have throughout the day.

Build a Support Group

Our final three healthy habits are all about friendships and personal relationships. Healthy Habit #7: Join an online club or weekly Zoom meeting about a hobby or special interest. Not only is this a great resource to build your skills and knowledge about your craft, but it’s a great and safe way to enjoy social interaction with people that have similar interests. Healthy Habit #8: Give back. This term is broad and can be interpreted however it feels right to you! Giving back to your community not only benefits the neighborhood around you, but also has been proven to lower anxiety levels while improving self-esteem. Our final Healthy Habit #9: Take the time to connect with friends and family – even when it’s not convenient. Our busy lives can often get in the way and in between the people we love, and it’s important to continue to foster your personal relationships throughout the days, weeks, months, and years not only for the sake of your health, but of the ones you love most.
