Transformative Goals: How Shoreline Park City Aligns with Utah’s Net-Zero Future

April 30, 2026

A New Mindset for Mountain Living

Park City, Utah has set an ambitious and admirable goal to be “net-zero carbon and run on 100% renewable electricity by 2030.” This means making efforts to reduce and/or offset carbon emissions by using alternative renewable energy sources and preserving natural land to act as a carbon sink. The city also has a goal of being zero waste by 2030.

Shoreline Park City is a new construction community on the Jordanelle reservoir. The development features spacious luxury twinhomes, amazing views, all the best amenities, and so much more. However, the most important feature is that Shoreline is completely on board with Utah’s net-zero future.

Why Mountain Towns are So Invested in Sustainability

The whole world feels climate change in different ways. Some experience flooding, whereas others experience drought and wildfires. Mountain communities have been impacted in a number of devastating ways including:

  • Record-setting heat
  • Shrinking winters (and shorter ski seasons)
  • Severe droughts
  • Increased risk and amount of wildfires
  • Decreasing water sources

All of these affect not only the lives of people who choose to call the mountains home year-round, but they also have a huge impact on the economic prosperity and livelihoods of local communities and businesses.

Mountain towns have recently become year-round tourist destinations, and the large majority of visitors come for the snow. Park City estimates that 60-70% of their revenue can be attributed to the four months of winter, which fuel demand for over 31,000 jobs across the state. This revenue and these jobs rely on the weather to be consistent and somewhat predictable.

The average snowfall in Park City is 277 inches, which is in line with the 2024-2025 season (279”). In two seasons prior (2022-2023 and 2023-2024), the area received a combined amount of over 1,000 inches of snowfall!

Whether it’s simple lifestyle changes or a focus on sustainable building, there’s no doubt that every little bit helps preserve the natural world for many years to come.

How Shoreline is Helping the Cause

New construction communities like Shoreline are uniquely positioned to contribute to the net-zero goal because building sustainable homes to begin with is much easier than making an older home sustainable. With technological advancements, there is no excuse to not be designing homes as smart as you can for the betterment of our planet.

The HERS Score

The HERS (Home Energy Rating System) Index is the industry’s rating system that evaluates how energy efficient homes are. The goal is to have as low a score as possible because that means a home is operating more efficiently than those with higher scores. Essentially, a lower HERS score means energy conserved and money saved!

Shoreline is proud to say that all of our homes have a rating between 56 and 60, which is 40-44 points better than the average new home and 70-74 points better than the average existing home.

This is ideal for those who love spending time outdoors, but it also aligns with the net-zero goal by increasing the amount of land available for carbon sequestration. These open spaces include beautiful mountainside parks, biking trails, and hiking trails.
