Get Ahead of Summer with This Maintenance Checklist
April 27, 2018
Spring has already sprung, and before we know it, summer will be on our doorstep. Warm weather and gentle breezes can make anyone spend their free time outside enjoying the trails, parks and lakes but it is important to manage your home maintenance now to prevent costly and often inconvenient repairs in the summer months to come. Put in the work now to free up those sunny days on the lake or by the pool. Don’t know where to start? We’ve put together some of the most important tasks to tackle before summer for you to reference.
Get Your Air Conditioning Summer-Ready
Summer is undoubtedly the hardest season on air conditioning units. Annual servicing by a professional is always a good idea for central units, but if it’s been a few years since anyone has inspected your system, it’s even more important. The last thing anyone wants is to turn the thermostat on a real scorcher of a day and have nothing come out of the ducts. Summer is also a peak season for air conditioning repairs, so get ahead of the curve and schedule your inspection now before your maintenance professional is booked with repairs till the Fourth of July. It is also a good idea to clean and inspect ceiling fans before summer starts. Clean all fans – ceiling or otherwise – with a damp rag or duster to make sure the air swirling around the room is as allergen-free as possible.
Wash Your Windows
Snow, rain, sleet and just general grime can really build up on windows during the winter months. Let in the light of spring and summer with a rag and some window cleaner. It’s amazing what a difference clean windows can make to let in natural light and brighten the mood of a room. It also helps protect your glass and improves the curb appeal of your home. Remember to clean the inside of the windows, too. Though that side is spared the elements, it still can develop a layer of dust that gives a dingy glare and can lead to allergies.
Keep Dirt Outside
While outside washing the windows, take extra efforts to keep dirt and mud outside. With all the outdoor activity of summer, it will only get worse as the months pass. One solution is to keep two mats at the door: one outside, and one inside. The outside mat should be made of coarse material to trap the most debris possible before it ever gets inside. The interior mat can be softer. Better yet, give family members a bin to toss their shoes in when they come inside. This can make a big difference in protecting your flooring and carpet.
Check Your Detectors
Seasonal maintenance days are a great reminder to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors around your home. Replace the batteries in any that aren’t working, and dust them all off. These simple preventative techniques can make all the difference in keeping you and your family safe.
When handled on a routine basis, home maintenance can be quick and painless, and save you plenty of time and money down the road. Remember, take care of you home and it will take care of you!
