Plan Ahead

Thanksgiving is all about preparation. The week before, finalize your menu and make a schedule for the day. What time does the turkey need to hit the oven? What time do guests arrive? What time will everyone sit down to eat? These may seem like no-brainers but ironing out the kinks ahead of the big day allows more time for the little thing.

Don’t Do It Alone

As the host, you may be responsible for the main dish, but an easy way to lessen the stress of the event is to not sweat the small stuff… aka the sides! Delegate a few dishes to your guests. Have someone bring the wine, another bring the sweet potatoes, and so on. If you plan to do this, make sure to ask your guests well in advance of the big day to make sure they have time to prepare. Additionally, be sure to follow up the week of Thanksgiving to make sure everything is accounted for.

Set the Table Early

Cooking takes up most of your time on Thanksgiving Day. But decorating for the event is a fun and important part of the day. Iron the tablecloth, fold the napkins, and polish the silver the night before so it’s one less thing on your to-do list day-of.  If you have a large party coming, set up a kids table in advance. Place some crafts and games on the table instead of decoration, to keep the kiddos entertained before food is ready.

Clean as You Go

A hosts’ job is never done. To ensure you’re not stuck cleaning while the guests enjoy after dinner drinks and desserts, get some cleaning done throughout the day. Wash dishes throughout the day and even designate a dishwasher to clean as you cook. This will also free up spatulas and pans you may need later in the day, and keeps the kitchen feeling under control.
