How to Decorate Your Home for Spring and Summer
April 13, 2018
Some days, it can feel as if winter will never melt into spring. Short days, barren landscapes and snow are fun at first, but soon you may catch yourself dreaming of lazy afternoons being warmed by the sun and a gentle breeze. Never fear: spring’s beautiful flowers to playing catch in the summer sun will be here before you know it! One great way to usher in the brighter, bolder days of spring and summer is to incorporate it into your décor.
Rotate or Replace Your Decor
One of the fastest ways to change the mood of your home is to change the décor. Doesn’t it make it feel so festive when you decorate for the holidays? The same can be done for any season! Consider florals, bright colors and animal prints for that spring/summer feeling. Shower curtains, artwork, throw pillows and area rugs are easy ways to breathe new life into a space. If you want something a little more dramatic, consider wallpaper prints to reinvent a room. Looking for a more natural way to introduce bright colors into a room? A bowl of citrus will brighten up a room with yellow, orange or green shades that really amp up your décor.
Introduce Greenery into the Space
The many shades of green, from sea foam and mint to Kelly and emerald, can evoke a sense of bringing the outside in. This is perfect for spring and summer when things are in bloom and color starts to return to the scenery. Green blankets, pillows and rugs are great places to start with low commitment. Bringing plants into the scene can also help introduce a feeling of spring into a room. If you love the color or want to evoke the feeling of greenery year-round, consider green furniture or accent walls to help root a space.
Swap Out Your Curtains
Curtains are an oft-overlooked part of décor, especially if you haven’t changed them since you moved in (we’re all guilty of it). Given their proximity to natural light and typically square footage alone, the look of your curtains can play a big role in the mood of the room. Take advantage of the impact curtains alone can have on transforming your space from dull winter to invigorating spring! From bold colors to themed prints (nautical is always a safe bet for summer), the options are practically endless. Consider mixed prints, as well. Balance out more than one print by keeping them all within in the same tonal family or adding neutrals elsewhere in the space.
Repaint Ceilings White
Over the years, that once white ceiling can become dingy. Though often in your peripherals, this can have a big impact on your perception of a room – especially when you’ve been staring out the windows and dingy off-white snow for months. Hitting the ceiling with a new coat of white paint can truly revitalize a room and get you on the road for spring, but be mindful of the tones of white you choose. Some shades of white can be warmer, cooler or have yellow or blue tones, which can shift the mood of a room. Choose wisely.
Incorporate Mirrors, Metallics and Light
Reflecting, or introducing, light can have the same uplifting effect as repainting that dingy ceiling. Mirrors and metallic surfaces make a room look bigger and brighter by reflecting the natural light in the room. Larger mirrors have bigger payoff, so don’t hesitate to make it a statement piece in the room. Metallics are typically safer when introduced sparingly: a key piece of décor, candles, picture frames, kitchen accessories, end tables or lamps. Speaking of lamps, be the light natural or artificial, brightening up a room can take the mood from cozy evenings spent curling by the fire to fun filled afternoons with the kids or reading a book. String lights in the backyard are also a great way to get started enjoying those warm summer nights.
Decorate with Summer Textures
Some textures just say, “Summer!” Burlap and linen bring to mind sailboats and days spent on the coast. Wicker and rattan conjure images of warm afternoons spent on patios with a cool glass of lemonade in hand. Though these textures may seem outdoorsy at first glance, there are great opportunities to bring them indoors to add a little spring to any space. Dabble in the trend with throw rugs and pillows or go all in with furniture like sideboards and dinette sets.
