Organizing Your New Home

August 12, 2023

When moving into a new home, unpacking can be a daunting final task. It’s difficult to know which items to keep or toss, let alone where to put them.

To start on the right foot, here are a few tips to make the most of your new space and begin sustainable organizing habits.

Address the Clutter

While unpacking, you may have come across a few boxes of items that don’t have a home and have been sitting in the same spot for quite some time.

Ask yourself:

  1. Do you need it?
  2. Do you use it?
  3. Do you love it?
  4. Do you have room to store it?

If the answer is no to 3-4 of these questions, it’s probably time to say goodbye. Research local shelters, donation bins, or recycling stations if you’re unsure where your unused goods belong. Big Brothers Big Sisters Utah and Recycle Utah are two great options to begin your search.

Store Items with Intention

Rather than buying containers without knowing what to do with them, try making a plan first. Group your items by whatever makes the most sense to you: color, alphabetical, season, etc. After that, plan how much space you need, where you need it, and what type of containers can fit in that space.

One of the most underrated storage spots is the overhead garage space. Yes, wall cabinets are great, but if you have the room consider investing in overhead racks to store seasonal items such as holiday decorations or summer outdoor games.

Switch Out Seasonal Clothing

While it may not be time to say goodbye to the shorts and tank tops that haven’t been worn in months, you can pack them away to make room for winter clothes. Re-organizing and refreshing your closet when the weather changes creates an illusion of an entirely new wardrobe and ensures you have all your options in front of you for the correct time of year.

Add Labels

It can be challenging to remember where your least used items are kept, and when you’re unable to find them, you might be tempted to buy new ones. Opt out of the junk drawer method and invest in labels – you’ll thank yourself later. Using labels wherever possible will help you and your family remember where items are located and prevent putting things in the wrong place.
