Reasons to Move to Park City in 2018

December 8, 2017

While we admit we may be a little partial to our home sweet home, Park City is truly a unique and wonderful place to live! We aren’t the only ones who think so. Travel+Leisure named it “America’s Favorite Town” in 2016, and Outside Magazine named it the “Best Town in America” in 2013. So, what is it about Park City that makes it such a fantastic place to put down roots? The short answer is “everything” but to help you decide for yourself, we’ve compiled 10 reasons why you should call Park City home – besides the most obvious reason, of course: GCD Communities!

Greatest Snow on Earth

It’s not just something we list on our license plates. We argue that while Utah has the Greatest Snow on Earth, the best place to take advantage of that snow is in Park City. Its three resorts offer some of the best opportunities for winter sports. In fact, North America’s largest ski resort is located in Park City, so there’s always a new slope to explore. More about quality than quantity? Deer Valley was recently named the second-best ski resort in the continent. Our ski-season is also beyond the norm. While most wrap in March, Park City’s typically last through at least mid-April. Pack up those skis. It’s time to hit the slopes!

Winters

If you’d rather spend your winters building snowmen in the backyard, Park City is still the place to be. Its yearly snowfall average is 411.1 inches of light and powdery snow. If you love hiking, biking or strolling through the snow, look no further than Park City for the winter wonderland of your dreams. Maybe snow isn’t really your thing? There’s still plenty of other things to do in Park City while the weather is cold. For example, there’s this film festival in January. Maybe you’ve heard of it? The Sundance Film Festival.

Summers

While the picturesque winters in Park City are definitely something to write home about, don’t write off the summers! With warm and pleasant summer weather, this time of year is beautiful and perfect for taking advantage of the park-like outdoor surroundings Park City is named for. Park City summers are also home to free summer concerts, a classic small town 4th of July celebration and a rodeo! Even the ski resorts get into the summer spirit; take the ski lift to access mountain biking, hiking and zip lines, or just enjoy the view!

Natural Landscapes

When we say view, we really mean it. Park City bursts into living color in the summer, with ample plants, flowers, greenery and trees to be seen. From striking mountain ranges to Jordanelle Reservoir just begging you to take the plunge, there is so much to explore. Every angle is postcard-worthy. See if from the ski in one of the popular hot air balloon rides!

Outdoor Lifestyle

Given its surroundings, it’s no surprise Park City is known for its outdoor lifestyle. Hiking and mountain biking are the primary summer sports of choice, with all imaginable winter sports taking the stage in winter. In addition to those, you’ll also find Park City residents boating, fishing, swimming, paddleboarding and off-roading. Even the spas can be a little outdoorsy in Park City, with nearby Homestead Crater boasting a geothermal spring.

Unique History

Where else can you say you live in a mining boom town turned ski resort? Park City has a rich history (pardon the pun) as a silver mining town. The Ontario Mine was at one time considered the greatest mine in the world, following the discovery of a large vein of silver ore that consistently had the highest yields. Over time, however, Park City nearly turned into a ghost town. In a last-ditch effort to save their town, a group of miners suggested the idea of a ski resort on the 10,000 acres of land they owned. The ski resort was known as Treasure Mountain (now Park City Resort) and so changed Park City’s luck, as it became one of the greatest ski destinations in the country.

Small-Town Charm

Despite its rise to ski resort stardom, Park City has retained its small-town charm. Though the town can see over half a million visitors each year, predominantly in winter when the ski resorts and Sundance are taking center stage, Park City’s population is under 8,000. Walking down Park City’s colorful and quant main street features a backdrop of shops to fill a lazy afternoon stroll or a myriad of nightlife spots. There is a close-knit community in Park City, and you’re sure to feel welcome!

Foodies Rejoice

If the weather, charm and scenery aren’t enough to convince you Park City is the place to be, we guarantee the food will! It’s not just the dining at the resorts, either. The town’s 100 eateries include many locations along Main Street. Whether it’s high end, five-star dining or comfort food with locally sourced ingredients, Park City has one heck of a blossoming foodie scene. It’s tough to walk up Main Street without finding a new menu you simply must try.

Public Transportation

If navigating parking in a small town is a concern, consider Park City’s public transportation. Whether it’s the buses that stop throughout the major hot spots and neighborhoods to the trolley that runs up and down Main Street (and, really, that’s where you were concerned about parking anyway) public transportation in Park City is 100% free – free to use, anytime, anywhere in town.

Proximity to Salt Lake City

Working Salt Lake City, but interested in a smaller town vibe to call home? Looking for a place to call your second home, but need something close to the airport? Park City is your answer on both counts. Just 40 minutes or so will have you in Salt Lake City or at Salt Lake City International Airport.

Convinced? If so, it’s time to find a home to call your own in America’s Favorite Town.
