Utah Mammoth, Olympic Dreams, and the Rise of Park City Living

A New Ice Age is the Hot Topic in Utah

It’s no secret that Utah is one of the fastest-growing states in America. With business booming, more and more people are looking to the state for their next opportunity. What you might not yet know, is the professional sports scene is only going to get bigger in the coming years.

There’s a palpable buzz in Utah, and it’s not just because of locals and visitors discovering Park City’s stunning real estate. Thanks in large part to the debut of the Utah Mammoth and Salt Lake City’s selection as the host for the 2034 Winter Olympics, northern Utah is establishing itself as a hub for sports, culture, and upscale living.

A Record of Sporting Excellence in Utah

First, let’s start off with a little history lesson. Though we may not be as synonymous with professional sports as some other states, Utah has quite a history in the field (or should we say “on” the field). Utahns can currently take in NBA games while rooting for the Utah Jazz, MLS games by championing Real Salt Lake, and even AAA-level minor league baseball supporting the Salt Lake Bees (an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels).

Utah also has the distinction of being a previous host for the 2002 Winter Olympics, when world-class athletes soared across the state’s famous snowy hills and varying terrain. It’s here in Park City you’ll find one of the only facilities in North America with sliding tracks and Nordic ski jumps. Not to mention, we have a museum dedicated to the 2002 Winter Games.

Previously, the state has had a number of notable professional hockey teams. The first of these was the Salt Lake Golden Eagles, which spanned from 1969 to 1994. Then came the Utah Grizzlies, which played from 1995 to 2005. Now, the state has welcomed an NHL team and set its eyes on the famous Stanley Cup.

Utah’s Newest NHL Hockey Team

After one season, the Utah Hockey Club officially rebranded as the Utah Mammoth, in reference to the gargantuan woolly creatures that once roamed the valleys and plains of North America thousands of years ago. This striking name sets up some high expectations for the team to make a suitably quaking presence on the ice.

Lately, this new team has put in effort to bring in young blood, such as the up-and-coming player J.J. Peterka. Peterka, coming off of a three-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres, is a sprightly 23-year-old with promising potential on the ice. Focusing on youthful energy, the Smith Entertainment Group has launched a hockey ticket program at the Delta Center to sell tickets to local college students and shoppers at Smith’s grocery stores. Starting at $10, this campaign is an effort the company has taken to increase younger audience attendance to hockey games and set Salt Lake City on the path to being a proper NHL city.

Additionally, this revenue will be directed towards SEG’s ongoing renovation project for the Delta Center. Chris Armstrong, President of the Mammoth’s Hockey Operations, had this to say about the plans for the Delta Center:

“Off the ice, we want to maximize the fan experience. We’re obviously renovating in a pretty significant way to make it optimized for hockey. In the meantime, we want to get creative to create the best fan experience possible and get as many people in this building as possible.”

One thing’s for sure, though; Utah’s love for sports, tight-knit communities, and state pride are just a few ingredients that make this place truly special.

The Winter Olympics Return to Salt Lake City and Park City

We’re just getting started! Not only will there be dozens of NHL and NBA games each year, the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, including Park City, will once again host the Winter Olympics in 2034. This puts Salt Lake City on a shortlist of cities that have hosted multiple Olympics alongside the likes of Paris, France; London, England; and Los Angeles.

Armstrong is optimistic about Utah’s future in sports beyond the hockey rink. He praises Salt Lake City for its impressive economy, and has made comparisons to Denver’s meteoric rise in the last several years. He also compliments the sense of community in Utah, emphasizing his personal goal for the team:

“The people in the community were so welcoming and so excited about what we were building, so that immediately gave you a sense of pride for where you live — to see that you’re having that kind of an impact on people.”
